Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission to the LESLLA Symposium Proceeding has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; uses the font Times New Roman; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • Remove cross-references. Some Word processor software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Open Office Writer etc.) allow you to insert a hyperlink/cross-reference which links to another section in your text (e.g. to Table 1 or Figure 2). Please don’t use these hyperlinks in your manuscript as they create formatting problems.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines (here APA Style 7th edition).
  • Where available, provide DOI numbers for journal articles and URL and retrieval date for less stable sources (e.g. white papers, newspaper articles, blog entries)
  • Did you pick the LESLLA Symposium proceedings issue your submission belongs to?

Preparing

Transfering your presentation at the LESLLA Symposium into an academic article is not easy for most people and requires some dedication and experience. There are plenty of good books and reports available to help you with this process. Here, we have gathered an incomprehensive (!) list of documents that we found helpful.

In LESLLA, we strive for asset-oriented language. Please use the following descriptors.

Genre

The LESLLASP will accept manuscripts in the following modalities:

  • Research article: This article features an empirical study that contributes to the scholarship in the LESLLA field. It follows a structure of introduction, purpose, methods, findings, discussions, and conclusion. Word limit: 5,000 words, excluding references
  • State-of-the-art review: This article provides an updated synthesis/analysis of literature on some issues related to LESLLA research, policy, or practice. Word limit: 5,000 words, excluding references
  • Perspectives from the field: This article features the perspectives of teachers, staff, students, and others who have important knowledge and expertise about LESLLA pedagogy, programming, and policy. These articles focus on what those working to serve LESLLA learners as teachers, curriculum developers, administrators, and policymakers have learned through everyday practice. Manuscripts should contain detailed and thoughtful reflection and thorough analysis of practical insights and experiences. Word limit: 3,000 words, excluding references
  • Symposium Reflections: This genre allows symposium presenters to capture the themes that arose during the symposium and the accompanying discussions and reflections. This genre aims to stimulate critical reflection on the presentation topic. It contains a brief summary of the presentation (akin to an abstract) and a reflection on the essential issues that arose from the presentations. The article should avoid reporting or evaluating the presentation but instead, focus on situating the reflection within relevant literature and current debates on the topic. Word limit: 1,000-1,200, excluding references

Formatting
For initial submissions, we encourage authors to follow these guidelines as much as possible. Please be assured that we do not reject a manuscript for failing to adhere to these author guidelines. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, these guidelines are shared with the authors. During the copyediting phase, authors will have additional opportunities to update the formatting of their manuscripts to adhere to these guidelines.

  1. How to format your manuscript - Checklist
  2. Manuscript Template  - Downloadable Word document

For the LESLLA Symposium Proceedings, we decided to follow the APA Guidelines, which are commonly used worldwide. Here is a collection of links to useful guides.

This is an excellent APA website that takes the headache out of paper formatting. Make yourself a nice cup of tea, and spend time perusing this website. Check out the link to Sample Papers, where you can download one of the Word files to use as a template and edit it to suit your paper.

Nervous, overwhelmed by the minutiae?? If this is your first time preparing a manuscript for publication, no worries! There are even annotated sample papers on that website that share some tips and tricks for formatting your manuscript.
