Abstract

The present study is part of a larger project called INMIGRA, focusing on linguistic integration and certification of Spanish at an initial level for immigrant workers. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which the formal education of a group of adult immigrants living in Madrid had an impact on their linguistic competence in Spanish as a foreign language, which was assessed by the Diploma LETRA. The results showed that older participants with less years of formal education scored lower on the exam, particularly on the sections of reading comprehension, audiovisual comprehension, and written expression and interaction. On the other hand, neither age nor years of formal education seemed to play a significant part in their oral competence.
